I planned in advance with this headshot and portrait shoot to go for a darker, more low key look, so I set up the lighting and backdrop accordingly before the client arrived and advised him to wear black. Below you can see that I used a Lastolite collapsible grey background, which appears completely black when settings are dialled into the camera. I went for 3 light strobe setup to start off with one Pika200 (Godox AD200) in a 60x90 softbox to camera right as key light, another Pika200 in a gridded 30x90 stripbox as a rimlight and a third Pika200 fitted with a standard reflector and MagMod MagSphere to light the backdrop and create a natural vignette. Finally I added a second Lastolite background used as a large reflector for fill to camera left.
Headshot and Portrait Photography Lighting Setup
I used the Sony A7iii and Sony FE 85mm F1.8 lens at 1/200s and f/8 for most shots. This allowed me to cut out all ambient light and give me plenty of depth of field on the subject. Each strobe was individually controlled using the camera mounted PixaPro PRO ST-IV (Godox XPro) transmitter. Below are a few of our favourite images from the shoot.
